Bookshelf no.1

The bookshelf project was started as a way to challenge my skills, as, by this time I had already worked a lot with wood.

The challenging nature of the project came from the material and the techniques used. Both sides of the bookshelf and the front of the drawer at its bottom are made from what was a single massive slab of wood. This material was complex to work with as it was bigger, heavier and more demanding than anything I had worked with before.

This thickness of material was however necessary for the wood carving and sculpting techniques I aimed to learn through this project.

The shelf is built to take into account the movement of the wood with temperature and moisture changes in the air to be durable and solid for a very long time.
